Chelsea revived their sinking ship in the Champions League in an emphatic fashion as they registered a massive 3-0 win over AC Milan on Wednesday.
The Blues were seen under pressure initially, with Milan doing most of the attacking. But the tables turned soon once Thiago Silva started putting pressure on the Milan defence, winning multiple headers from set-pieces. That opened things up for Chelsea and Wesley Fofana managed to score from a rebound to give them the lead in the match.
There was no stopping Chelsea after that. The Blues were all over the Milan defence and they kept them under pressure throughout the game. The two teams went into the half-time break with a 1-0 scoreline in Chelsea’s favour and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang increased their lead soon as he netted in the 56th minute of the match via a superb cross from Reece James. This was also Aubameyang’s first Champions League goal since the 2017/18 season.
Milan could still think about making a comeback in the match but their miseries were increased further when James himself netted a brilliant goal at the near post to make the scoreline read 3-0.
There were no goals in the match after that but Chelsea managed to maintain their lead and bag all three points. The win propelled them to the second spot in the Group E on the basis of goal difference.
Chelsea boss Graham Potter was particularly impressed with Reece James’ performance in the match.
“I think Reece is just a fantastic player and he’s a young player, so he’s developing all the time. He’ll get better and better as we go,” Potter said after the match.
“I’ve really enjoyed working with him – he’s got a lot to offer. He can play any game in the world, he’s just tremendous. My job is to try to help him reach his potential because his potential is beyond the sky.
“We love him. He’s so important for us. He could be a Chelsea legend – that’s the potential he has,” Potter added.
