Chelsea’s abysmal start to the season continued on Sunday as the blues lost again, this time at Stamford Bridge at home to Aston Villa. Mauricio Pochettino’s side has only so far managed to get a single victory from six games, with the only win coming against Luton Town, while all the results have been draws against Bournemouth and Liverpool.
After a decent first, both teams went into halftime level without a goal, and Chelsea’s case was hardened by a red card to Malo Gusto in the 58th minute of the game. Aston Villa then took full advantage as Ollie Watkins scored the winner in the 73rd minute.
The result leaves the Blues four points away from relegation with five points from six games played, sitting in 14th position. Mauricio Pochettino’s men are also looking for their first Premier League goal since their 3-0 victory over Luton Town on August 25.
Even though Chelsea will face Brighton this midweek in the EFL Cup, their next Premier League game will be on October 2 in a London derby against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Arsenal, and Tottenham Hotspur shared the spoils after a 2-2 draw at Emirates Stadium as Romero’s own goal and a Bukayo Saka penalty were cancelled by Son Heung-Min brace.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was disappointed not to have seen his team get all three points in the fixture.
“Well, we are very disappointed not to win the three points, especially when you go twice in front. Especially the moment when we conceded the goals. We could have scored 2-0 in the situation with Gabi. We lacked some composure on the ball to get into the final third.” Arteta said.
Elsewhere, Liverpool got the 3-1 win over West Ham, while Sheffield United lost scandalously 8-0 to Newcastle United. Eddie Howe’s side had eight different goalscorers on the scoresheet.
