Liverpool’s 30-year wait for an English Premier League title has finally come to an end as Chelsea beat Manchester City two goals to one at the Stamford Bridge Stadium on Thursday night.
Jurgen Klopp’s side needed two wins to clinch the title when the season resumed after the coronavirus break. Still, a win in their last game and Chelsea’s triumph on Thursday night ensured that Liverpool succeeded the team that pipped them to the title last season.
Meanwhile, the Reds will not have the opportunity to have fans around the next time they play at the Anfield; neither will there be any open bus parade due to the coronavirus pandemic as the mayor of the City advised fans to stay at home.
Chelsea, just like in 2016 when they drew Spurs to win Leicester City the title, were in charge of making the king this season as they led through Christian Pulisic in the first half.
Kevin de Bruyne equalized for City in the second half through a free-kick before the hour mark, but Fernandina’s error in the box reduced Pep Guardiola’s side to ten men and Willian duly slotted home the resultant penalty.
Coincidentally, Liverpool’s next game will be against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on the 2nd of July, and with 23 points behind Liverpool, the results from the teams’ remaining fixtures will be inconsequential as Manchester City can no longer meet up mathematically.
Meanwhile, Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp has stated his feeling as his team is crowned Champions of the EPL, describing it as an incredible and unbelievable achievement.
“It’s unbelievable. Much more than I ever thought would be possible. Becoming champions with this club is absolutely incredible. It is an incredible achievement from my players… and a pure joy for me to coach them.” Klopp was quoted by Sky Sports.
