Chelsea have added retired goalkeeper Pter Cech into their Premier League squad for the season as an emergency goalkeeper.
Petr Cech retired in the 2018-19 season after Arsenal’s Europa League final defeat by Chelsea in 2019 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The 38-year-old is the club’s technical and performance adviser, but he will also serve as “emergency cover”.
Cech won 13 trophies, including four Premier League titles and the Champions League with Chelsea, having spent 11 years as a player at Stamford Bridge.
His last game for the club was in May 2015 in the 3-1 win over Sunderland in May 2015, before joining London rivals Arsenal.
“Petr Cech has been included in the squad as emergency goalkeeper cover. This is a precautionary step due to the unprecedented conditions currently caused by the Covid-19 crisis. He takes up a position as a non-contract player,” said a Chelsea club statement.
Cech returned to Chelsea after retiring at Arsenal in the summer of 2019 to take up his new role and has recently been helping with the goalkeeping coaching.
Chelsea now has four goalkeepers in the team with Eduoard Mendy, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Willy Caballero, the main three.
The Blues played out a 0-0 draw against Sevilla on Tuesday evening, and the scoreline was majorly due to Mendy’s heroics in goal against the Spanish Europa League champions.
Frank Lampard’s men were unlucky at the weekend, having let a 2-0 lead slip to draw 3-3 against Southampton in the Premier League at the weekend.
Chelsea faces Manchester United next in the English Premier League at the weekend before they travel to Russia to face Krasnodar in another UEFA Champions League group stage match.
Meanwhile, Manchester United got a result away in Paris as they beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-1. Manchester City will host Porto on Wednesday while Liverpool will face Ajax.
