A final decision by the Scottish Premiership nears, with Celtic poised to win their ninth consecutive title. Hearts, on the other hand, is on the brink of relegation to the Scottish Championship.
Inverness requested a null-and-void finish but the SPFL’s plan always was to crown winners in all four divisions. That decision was the more likely outcome considering that more than 75 per cent of the season is already in the books.
Now, since 13 of 42 teams decided not to hold an inquiry into the SPFL in the wake of the controversial season-ending vote, SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster and his board will have to come together to wrap up possibly the most tumultuous Scottish football season in memory.
The SPFL now has a mandate to complete the season and they have already crowned Dundee United, Raith Rovers and Cove Rangers champions in the three divisions below the Scottish Premiership.
The decision-makers at the SPFL don’t have much time to waste, as UEFA ordered teams to come to a final decision before May 25.
The Bundesliga returns on May 16 while the Premier League has their ‘Project Restart,’ aiming to resume play in June.
Most of the leagues at UEFA nations will not return behind closed doors. Many have already shifted their focus to planning next season.
The Scottish Premiership will follow the likes of Ligue 1 by calling the season. According to Record Sport, the 19-20 top-flight season will be called before the deadline set by UEFA.
Celtic has won every single title since the Scottish Premiership was established in July, 2013. This means that no team has dethroned them for eight long years.
