Fulham FC Captain Tom Cairney has been nominated for the PFA Championship player for the month of September of the current 2019/2020 season.
He was chosen alongside five other nominees, which include Sheffield Wednesday FC duo Barry Bannan and Steven Fletcher, Jordy de Wijs of Hull City FC, Chey Dunkley of Wigan Athletic FC and Nahki Wells of Queens Park Rangers FC.
The nomination comes as no surprise to the Cottagers faithful who have witnessed great performances from their Talisman so far this campaign. The Scotsman has been in great form in the English second tier netting five goals with three assists this season.
Alongside top striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, the skipper has been part of a free-scoring Fulham outfit that are the second-highest goal scorers in the championship with 20 goals from 11 matches.
It was his performances in September in particular that caught the eye. Cairney first scored against Sheffield Wednesday on Match Day 8 in a 1-1 stalemate. However, it was his man of the match display against Wigan Athletic on 27th September that stood him out — showcasing his midfield ability, dominating the middle of the park with impressive 92% pass accuracy and making five key passes. He capped off an excellent game with a long-range curler, the second goal in a 2-0 victory over the Latics.
Cairney will be hoping he can top off an excellent start to the season with a player of the month gong. This marks a contrasting change in fortune from the previous season in the English Premier League, where the skipper could only register a single goal all season. This, in no small measure, contributed to the Cottagers relegation from the top flight last season. The talented Scotsman will be aiming for a swift return to Premier League as The Lily Whites continue to battle for automatic promotion places.
Cairney will be busy with the Scottish National team during the international break, but should be back in league action when Fulham travel away to face Stoke City FC on Saturday, 19th of October.
Voting for the player for the month of September will conclude on Wednesday, 9th of October at 8 AM.
Fulham FC are 1.35 to emerge as the top London club in the Championship, while neighbours Brentford FC are pegged at 4.50 to finish as the top London club.
