Moises Caicedo’s powerful strike earned Chelsea a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, denying the Red Devils a much-needed Premier League victory in their first match since sacking manager Erik ten Hag. The result left United struggling in 13th place, still far from the top-four target, while Chelsea edged into fourth above Arsenal on goal difference.
Interim manager and United legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, set to be replaced by Ruben Amorim later this month, had been hoping to continue his successful start. After leading United to a 5-2 victory over Leicester in the League Cup quarterfinal midweek, the former striker received enthusiastic support from fans who chanted his name in a lively atmosphere before kickoff.
The breakthrough moment came 20 minutes before full-time. United was awarded a penalty when Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Robert Sanchez, clipped United striker Rasmus Hojlund in the box. Bruno Fernandes converted from the spot, coolly sending Sanchez the wrong way. The goal ignited jubilant celebrations, with Van Nistelrooy sprinting down the touchline, visibly energized by the team’s lead.
However, the joy was fleeting. Just four minutes later, Chelsea capitalized on a set piece. A corner kick cleared only to the edge of the penalty area found Caicedo, who connected cleanly, firing a low shot into the bottom corner. The Ecuadorian midfielder’s equalizer ensured Chelsea would walk away with a hard-earned point.
The match highlighted both United’s resilience and their ongoing struggles in front of goal, an issue that plagued Ten Hag’s tenure and was once again evident. In the first half, United failed to capitalize on promising opportunities. Marcus Rashford came closest to scoring, hitting the crossbar with a well-placed volley just before the break. Later, Alejandro Garnacho squandered a promising chance from a Fernandes cut-back, with his shot easily saved by Sanchez.
Chelsea, meanwhile, had the better of the early exchanges, nearly scoring through Noni Madueke, whose header from Cole Palmer’s corner rattled the post. Pedro Neto also came close to putting the visitors ahead, firing a shot just wide after a dynamic solo run early in the second half.
Chelsea’s reliance on Palmer for creative spark was evident, but United’s defensive midfield pairing of Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte limited the young playmaker’s impact. Nevertheless, Palmer managed to keep the Blues’ offense ticking in key moments, allowing them to push forward against a vulnerable United defense.
With Amorim absent as he prepares to lead Sporting Lisbon against Manchester City in the Champions League, Van Nistelrooy will continue to hold the reins temporarily. Yet, the task ahead for the incoming manager is clear: restore United’s form and address the scoring woes that have haunted them this season.
The result keeps United well below their season’s ambitions, and fans will hope the upcoming changes in leadership will bring the resurgence they’ve been waiting for.
