Burnley and Leeds Seal Premier League Return as Sheffield United Face Playoff Route

    April 22, 2025

Burnley secured automatic promotion to the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Sheffield United at Turf Moor on Saturday, joining Leeds United in a dramatic day of Championship football.

The result, fueled by a Josh Brownhill brace, ensured Burnley’s immediate return to the top flight just one season after relegation. Brownhill struck early before Tom Cannon’s equaliser gave Sheffield United hope. But the Burnley midfielder found the net again in the second half, dealing a crushing blow to the Blades’ automatic promotion hopes.

Earlier in the day, Leeds United surged to the top of the table with a commanding 6-0 demolition of Stoke City at Elland Road. Joel Piroe was the star of the show, netting a hat-trick within the first 20 minutes and adding a fourth before halftime. The hosts were 5-0 up at the break, sealing their return to the Premier League with a resounding statement.

Leeds, now on 94 points with two games to play, needed Burnley to avoid defeat against Sheffield United to clinch promotion. Burnley’s win ensured both clubs, tied at the top, are now out of reach of third-placed Sheffield United, who remain on 86 points.

The result marks a triumphant comeback for Scott Parker’s Burnley side, while Leeds bounce back to the Premier League after a one-year absence. Their relegation in 2023 ended a three-year stint in the top flight, but their dominant showing against Stoke highlighted a team determined to reclaim its place.

Meanwhile, the playoff battle remains wide open. Fourth-placed Sunderland, despite a 1-0 home loss to Blackburn Rovers, have secured a playoff berth. Fifth-placed Bristol City lost 3-1 at Luton Town but clung to a slim edge over Coventry City, who also fell 3-1, this time to bottom-side Plymouth Argyle.

Middlesbrough missed a golden opportunity to climb the table, losing 2-1 to Sheffield Wednesday despite taking an early lead. The defeat left them stuck in seventh with 63 points, behind Bristol (67) and Coventry (66). Millwall (63) and Blackburn (62) remain in the playoff hunt as the season nears its climax.

With just two matches remaining, the fight for promotion remains intense, even as Leeds and Burnley begin preparations for their Premier League return.
