Cologne climbed to sixth on the league standings after a Jan Thielmann emphatic goal in the closing seconds of the game sealed a 3-1 win over Hertha Berlin on Sunday.
French international Anthоnу Mоdеѕtе and ex Hertha Berlin рlауеr Ondrеj Dudа got on the scoresheet as Cоlоgnе continued their fine form registering their third league win in a row putting them above Union Berlin on goal difference.
With the upsurge in cases of coronavirus hitting teams in the Bundesliga, Hertha has also had their fair share of these cases, but luckily, they had some players back in the side like Santiago Ascacibar and Luсаѕ Tоuѕаrt recovering in time to play with the latter coming in as a substitute with absentees like center back Dedryck Bоуаtа and striker Ishak Bеlfоdіl failing to make it to the matchday squad.
After several chances begging to be converted by the away side, Cologne grabbed the opening goal of the game in the 30th minute when Mark Uth whipped in a dangerous ball into the 18-yard box, which met a wonderful header by Modeste to make it 1-0.
Two minutes later, Cologne seems to be cruising as they quickly doubled their lead after a half-cleared ball fell to Duda, which he fired home.
The second half resumed, and Vladimir Darida pulled one back in the 52nd minute. Any hopes of a comeback were squashed as Jan Thielmann’s strike safely secured the vital three points needed for the away side.
Elsewhere, Wolfsburg fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat, away at Bochum as Milos Pantovic’s goal proved to be the difference.
Borussia Dortmund also came back from two goals down at Frankfurt to win 3-2 as the Black and Yellow side rallied round to claim an away win. While defending Champions, Bayern Munich fell to a disappointing 2-1 loss at home to Gladbach. However, the Bavarians lead the Bundesliga standings with 43 points, with Dortmund second place followed closely by Hoffenheim and Freiburg.
