Brentford got a 3-1 victory over Liverpool on Monday evening to dent Liverpool’s UEFA Champions League ambitions. The Reds traveled to the beehive to face the Bees in a game they needed to win in search of consistency in their league results this season.
However, the Reds conceded first in the first half through an own goal from Ibrahima Konate. A second goal in the 40th minute of the first half was ruled out for offside by VAR, but another goal in the 42nd minute by DR Congo international Yoane Wissa stood.
Darwin Nunez scored three minutes after the break but was canceled by the VAR before Alex Oxlade Chamberlain scored in the 50th minute.
Bryan Mbuemo’s 84th-minute goal completed Brentford’s search for three points and put them just two points behind Liverpool on the table.
Manager Jurgen Klopp bemoaned the team’s defending after the game.
“The third goal should not be a goal, easy as that. If you’ve ever played football and been in a foot sprint and you get a slight push, you go down because you cannot keep balance. That’s how it is, and you could see that,” Klopp said.
Liverpool are sixth with 38 points from seventeen games, while Brentford, who were without injured Ivan Toney, secured their first win over Liverpool at home since 1938.
Liverpool are now four points behind Manchester United, who are in fourth position and the final UEFA Champions League places.
Liverpool’s next game is an FA Cup tie against Wolves on the 7th of January, while Brentford will be home to West Ham United.
On Tuesday, Premier League matches will continue as Arsenal play against Newcastle United, Everton host Brighton, Leicester City and Fulham will battle, and Manchester United welcomes Bournemouth to Old Trafford.
