In a final preparation for Copa America 2024, Brazil and the United States played to a 1-1 draw in a friendly match in Orlando on Wednesday. Both teams used the encounter as a crucial warm-up ahead of the tournament, with the U.S. managing to avoid defeat against Brazil for only the second time in 20 matches.
The U.S. team, still reeling from a heavy 5-1 defeat to Colombia last weekend, was under significant pressure to deliver a better performance. This match was seen as a critical test of their readiness for the upcoming Copa America, especially considering the high stakes and fierce competition they will face.
“There was a lot of talk amongst the players after the 5-1 loss to Colombia,” U.S. goalkeeper Matt Turner told TNT Sports.
“We need to know, friendly or not, it doesn’t matter, you’re the U.S., you’re going to play in Copa America, you’re going to play against South American teams that don’t like you very much and want to prove a point. We have to have a certain level of intensity every time we step out onto the pitch that we lacked in the Colombia game but had tonight,” he added.
Brazil struck first in the 17th minute when a misjudged clearance by Turner led to a quick Brazilian counterattack. Raphinha took advantage of the error, setting up Real Madrid forward Rodrygo, who finished smoothly to give Brazil the lead. Despite the early setback, the U.S. responded well, maintaining pressure and creating opportunities.
The U.S. equalized in the 26th minute through Christian Pulisic. The forward, who was fouled just outside the penalty area, expertly converted the resulting free kick with a low shot that beat Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson at the near post. Pulisic’s goal was a testament to his skill and composure under pressure, providing a much-needed boost for his team.
Reflecting on the match, Rodrygo acknowledged the tough competition from the U.S. “It was a tough game, you always want to win, but because it’s a warm-up, you have to try not to lose,” he told TV Globo. “They gave us a hard time, but we also created a lot, we just lacked a bit of flair. We have to carry on like this, train hard to do well at the Copa America.”
The draw leaves both teams with valuable insights and lessons as they prepare for the tournament. Brazil, nine-time Copa America champions, will kick off their Group D campaign against Costa Rica on June 24, followed by matches against Paraguay and Colombia. The U.S. team, on the other hand, will face Bolivia on June 23, before taking on Panama and Uruguay in Group C.
As the Copa America approaches, both teams will look to refine their strategies and build on their performances from this friendly. For the U.S., the draw against a formidable Brazilian side serves as a reminder of their potential and a motivator to maintain the intensity required to compete at the highest level. For Brazil, it highlights the need for consistency and the importance of capitalising on their scoring opportunities.
