Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has been voted the La Liga player of the season for the 2019/2020 season beating FC Barcelona skipper and Argentine forward Lionel Messi to the award.
The French forward won the league title with Real Madrid, who were crowned champions of the La Liga before the end of the season in the game against Villarreal after beating them 2-1 at home.
Benzema netted 21 times for Real Madrid as they marched onto their first La Liga title in three years and also the second under manager Zinedine Zidane who is having his second stint at the club.
However, he was beaten to the pichichi trophy by Lionel Messi, who scored 25 goals for Barcelona this season and also made 21 assists, contributing to 46 goals for the team in a single La Liga season a record to be held only his holds.
Meanwhile, the loss of the title to their rivals Real Madrid gave Benzema the edge as he won by a big percentage of the votes, 37% of the votes in comparison to Messi’s 31%.
Also, in the third position was Sergio Ramos, the Real Madrid skipper and defender who broke the record for the most goals scored in a season by a defender in the La Liga with his 11th goal of the season against Leganes in a 2-2 draw in Real Madrid final game of the season.
The Spanish international has been instrumental alongside Karim Benzema, scoring some important goals in Real Madrid’s final few games of the season after the restart of the season.
Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is Real Madrid’s only other player in the top 10 of the players of the seasons list as the goalkeeper placed 7th on the list.
Also on the list are Villarreal’s Santi Cazorla, Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, Real Sociedad’s Martin Odegaard who is on-loan from Real Madrid, Sevilla’s Lucas Ocampos, Gerrard Moreno also of Villarreal and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos.
