Bayern Munich have reportedly held fresh talks with Leroy Sane over extending his contract, which is soon to expire, although he could still be sold when the transfer window opens next month.
The five-year deal Sane signed with Bayern upon joining from Manchester City in 2020 finishes at the end of this season.
As of January 1, the winger could enter a pre-contract agreement with an overseas club with a view to free transfer in the summer.
Sane has so far shown no desire to leave Bayern, revealing in November that he is “comfortable” and the Bundesliga club remains his “focus.”
However, previous rounds of talks have failed to yield an agreement over a new contract, with sources in Germany revealing Bayern are hoping to trade off a potential reduction in Sane’s basic salary by improving performance-related bonuses.
That could lead to the player earning less under new terms, with Michael Olise’s summer arrival adding to the competition for places.
Sane has started just twice in the Bundesliga this season, scoring three goals with no assists in 14 appearances across all competitions.
Inside sources reveal that Bayern director Max Eberl is “practically” open to Sane signing a new contract to stay in Munich.
However, the two parties are distant apart, and no decision on that front will likely be made before March.
It, therefore, remains a possibility that Sane is actually sold before then, with Bayern also weighing up the risk of him becoming a free agent in July.
The Bavarian hierarchy are prepared to “consider top offers” for a sale during the January transfer window.
Premier League sides Arsenal and Manchester United have been most heavily linked with the 28-year-old.
Sane previously enjoyed a successful spell in England, winning two Premier League titles in four seasons with Manchester City. He was bought from Schalke in 2016 in a deal potentially worth up to £46.5m and sold to Bayern for a package valued at £54.8m.
