The goalkeeping department at Bayern Munich is settled, but there needs to be a decision on the future of senior players every season due to rolling one-year contracts handed to them. Manuel Neuer is expected to hold initial talks over a new contract with Bayern before the end of the year.
According to various news sources in Germany, Bayern will hold talks with Sven Ulreich in November.
The Bavarian club is open to offering another one-year contract extension to Ulreich, provided Neuer stays for one more season and Daniel Peretz goes out on loan.
Ulreich has been a fine deputy for Neuer over the two different spells at Bayern. He has always stepped up to do a good job when Neuer has been on the sidelines due to injury.
It is a no-brainer for Bayern to keep him around the squad if he is not planning to retire from the game.
The 35-year-old goalkeeper is open to eventually retiring at Bayern Munich and could work at the club in a different role.
For now, he is still a valuable member of the squad. Along with deputizing Neuer, Ulreich is a leader and a strong voice in the dressing room.
Bayern have done a good amount of groundwork to be in a good position when Neuer and Ulreich call it time on their careers. Both senior goalkeepers can play at the top level for a season before Die Roten can bring forward their succession plans.
Alexander Nübel is the favorite to replace Neuer by the start of the 2026/27 campaign. Nübel has been on an upward curve in the last three years, spending time on loan at Monaco and VfB Stuttgart.
He was one of the best goalkeepers in the Bundesliga last season while helping Stuttgart finish second in the Bundesliga.
Nübel has already signed a long-term contract at Bayern. He will return to Bayern from Stuttgart at the end of next season.
By the end of the 2025/26 campaign, Neuer can pass the baton to Nübel as Die Roten’s number one. Meanwhile, the highly rated Daniel Peretz can replace Sven Ulreich. After a loan spell away from Bayern next season, Peretz can be ready to replace Ulreich. The Bavarian club is also closely monitoring a couple of promising young goalkeepers.
Bayern have not been at their best when it comes to replacing star players at the right time. However, they have laid out a much better plan for the succession of Neuer and Ulreich.
