Bayern hopeful of Kimmich stay amid contract extension plans

Bayern Munich have wrapped up three contract extensions in recent weeks, and they are aiming to get Joshua Kimmich’s one soon as well.

The Bavarian’s sporting director, Max Eberl, revealed he is hopeful they can complete Joshua Kimmich’s contract extension.

Bayern have recently extended the contracts of Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies, and Jamal Musiala, who signed his new deal, which will keep him at the club until 2030 on Friday.

Kimmich’s current contract, which he signed back in August 2021, is set to expire at the end of this season.

The German has made 424 appearances in all competitions for Bayern since joining from RB Leipzig in 2015, scoring 43 goals and registering 114 assists in that time.

He has helped the club win seven Bundesliga titles, three DFB-Pokal medals, six DFL-Supercups, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup.

“We’ve done our work little by little. We’ve had very good discussions with Joshua. With the extension, we’ve clearly shown what our idea is,” emphasized Eberl.

Eberl emphasized on knowing what exactly the club want, with Kimmich knowing as well the club plans.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, the club’s director revealed that the deal  will hopefully get over the finish line.

“He wants to stay at Bayern Munich, he wants to win the Champions League. If he didn’t want to stay, we wouldn’t be talking.”

Bayern currently sit top of the Bundesliga, with an eight-point lead over defending champions Bayer Leverkusen, who they held to a 0-0 draw on Saturday.

Vincent Kompany’s side were on the back foot for much of that game as Leverkusen pushed for a goal. Bayern managed just two shots, with both of those coming in the second half, but neither was on target.

Leverkusen are only the second team not to concede a shot on target in a Bundesliga match on record (since 2004-05) against Bayern, previously only Wolfsburg managed this in May 2008.

While Bayern generated just 0.05 expected goals (xG), they defended staunchly against Leverkusen’s threat. The hosts created 2.16 xG from 15 shots, hitting the woodwork with two of those, and could not find a way through.

Neuer was pleased with the defensive effort shown by the team, though, as it ensured their lead at the top of the table was not cut by Xabi Alonso’s men.
