Barcelona’s disastrous handling of Dani Olmo’s registration has left the player’s future at the club hanging in the balance. Despite coach Xavi’s desire to have Olmo available for selection, the club’s failure to meet La Liga’s financial requirements has resulted in the player being deregistered.
Olmo’s situation is a symptom of Barcelona’s deeper financial woes, which have been exacerbated by the club’s reckless spending in recent years.
The saga began when Barcelona signed Olmo from RB Leipzig for €103 million (£85m/$106m) in the summer, despite being over La Liga’s spending limit. The club’s president, Joan Laporta, and sporting director, Deco, insisted that they could afford the outlay and still adhere to the league’s financial regulations. However, their plan to raise funds through player sales and other means failed to materialize, leaving Olmo’s registration in doubt.
The fallout from the saga has been intense, with supporters group Som un Clam calling for Laporta’s resignation.
“We demand his resignation. What we have experienced in the last hours of 2024 shows that the vicious circle in which the club’s governing team has entered has fully exploded.” the group statement read.
Laporta’s position as president is increasingly untenable, with former presidential candidate Victor Font among those calling for him to step down.
The Olmo saga is just the latest example of Barcelona’s financial mismanagement, which has left the club on the brink of disaster. With the team struggling on the pitch and the club’s finances in chaos, it remains to be seen how Laporta and his board can recover from this latest debacle. One thing is certain, however: Barcelona’s fans deserve better than the incompetence and recklessness that has characterized the club’s leadership in recent years.
