The end seems to have come for Clement Lenglet and Sergi Roberto at Spanish club Barcelona after a club statement from the Bluagrana revealed that the first team’s captain’s contract won’t be renewed after it ended last season.
Similarly, Clement Lenglet seems not to be in the plans of Barcelona manager Hansi Flick who would rather see him go on a full transfer, but the player still has two years left on his contract. He has gone on a stint of loans previously, and another loan stint is assured for the 2024/2025 season.
However, Barcelona’s prolonged financial issues leave them seeking for ways to free up their finances and these two departures will ease the financial burden. The club confirmed that Sergi Roberto has made his official departure while revealing that he will have a farewell event on Tuesday.
“The first team captain’s contract came to an end at the conclusion of last season, and via an emotional video published on his social media networks, he has made his farewell to the Club public. Furthermore, the Catalan player will hold a farewell event at the Auditori 1899 at the Club on Tuesday, August 13, at 12 pm CEST in the presence of President Joan Laporta. The event will be shown live on Barça One.” The statement read.
Barcelona will face French side Monaco in a pre-season final of the Joan Gamper trophy on Monday at Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. The club will start their La Liga season with an away game against Valencia on August 17 for a chance to start the 2024/2025 season on a good note.
Hansi Flick has taken over from Xavi Hernandez, who was eventually sacked from the position despite reassurances last season. He was only able to lead the team to a second-place finish behind Real Madrid in the 2023/2024 season.
