Spanish La Liga club side Barcelona has confirmed that Spain international and midfielder Gabby will have to undergo surgery on his knee injury, which she sustained recently.
The 20-year-old Garvey injured his anterior cruciate ligament in Spain’s final Euro 2024 qualifier on Sunday against Georgia. Gavi only played 26 minutes of the game as he was replaced by Athletic Club’s Oihan Sancet.
The La Roja went ahead to win the game 3-1 courtesy of goals from Le Normand in the second minute of the game, Ferran Torres’s goal in the second half, and an own goal to get the result that secures the top spot at the end of the qualifiers ahead of Scotland in the group.
However, despite the victory, it was overshadowed by Gavin’s injury, which Barcelona has now confirmed to be a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee based on his statements that the club released on Monday.
“Test carried out on Monday morning on the first team player Gavi, have shown that he has a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and an associated injury to the lateral meniscus. The player will have surgery in the coming days, after which a new medical update will be released.” the statement read.
Gavi has made 15 appearances for Barça, this season starting 13. The midfielder has scored against Villarreal in the league and Royal Antwerp in the Champions League, and he has also provided one assist.
Gavi made his senior team debut in August 2021 as a 17-year-old and has grown in status for club and country. Sunday’s game was his 19th appearance for club and country this season.
It is speculated that Gavi will miss the rest of the season, including the Euro 2024 competition in total. Spain will know their Euro 2024 opponents on December 2 when the draw is made.
