On a night that Manchester City confirmed their place in the knockout stage despite failing to win in Denmark, Chelsea improved their chances of progressing by recording successive wins against AC Milan.
The Blues were bottom of their group last week when they faced AC Milan at Stamford Bridge, securing a win that took them off the root of the table.
This week, they managed to make it seven points from four matches after beating their host in Milan 2-0, albeit the Italians played a huge part of the game with ten men.
Former Chelsea defender Fikayo Tomori was sent off in the 19th minute in a surprise decision, and the Blues played the remaining 70 minutes with a man advantage.
Italian midfielder Jorginho who was making his 200th appearance for the Blues since joining, stepped up to score the resultant penalty.
Pierre Emerick Aubameyang scored his second successive UEFA Champions League goal for Chelsea by netting in the 34th minute.
Chelsea will face Aston Villa, Brentford, and Manchester United in the Premier League consecutively before their next UEFA Champions League game against Austrian side Salzburg.
Meanwhile, it was a dramatic but goalless encounter for Manchester City when they faced FC Copenhagen at the Parken stadium in Denmark.
Pep Guardiola’s side had a goal disallowed by the VAR and lost a penalty taken by Riyadh Mahrez before getting reduced to ten men on the half-hour mark when Sergio Gomez was red-carded.
Nevertheless, it didn’t stop the English Champions from securing a knockout phase place, as Sevilla’s failure to win at Dortmund meant that Manchester City won’t be finishing outside the top two.
Pep Guardiola played the game without fielding Norwegian striker Erling Haaland, and he explained why.
“He finished the game against Southampton so, so tired and didn’t recover well. Yesterday was not good, today a little better but not perfect, so we decided not to take the risk.” Pep Guardiola said.
