In a pulsating Champions League clash, Atletico Madrid pulled off a remarkable comeback to defeat Feyenoord 3-2. Alvaro Morata was the hero for Atletico, netting two crucial goals, while Antoine Griezmann added the equalizer in a thrilling encounter.
The Dutch champions, Feyenoord, started strong and grabbed an early lead when Igor Paixão set up Ayase Ueda, whose shot deflected off goalkeeper Jan Oblak and teammate Mario Hermoso, finding the back of the net.
However, Atletico Madrid quickly responded as Morata capitalized on a deflected pass by Koke Resurrección, initially disallowed for offside but later reversed after a video review.
Feyenoord didn’t back down and regained the lead when David Hancko took advantage of Atletico’s offside trap failure on a free-kick, scoring past Oblak.
With the score at 2-1 in Feyenoord’s favor, Atletico continued to press, and just before halftime, Griezmann displayed his brilliance, scoring with his back to the goal from close range.
Morata sealed the comeback two minutes into the second half, stretching his leg to convert a lobbed pass from Nahuel Molina for the winning goal.
Alvaro Morata expressed the team’s determination, stating, “We knew we had to suffer and pulled out a good win. We never lost our confidence that things would go our way.”
This victory was crucial for Diego Simeone’s Atletico, as they aim to progress to the knockout rounds after finishing last in their group last season.
In the other Group E match, Lazio secured a stoppage-time victory over Celtic, leaving Atletico and Lazio tied with four points each, while Feyenoord has three, and Celtic remains at zero.
The match provided a thrilling display of attacking football and showcased Morata’s prolific form, with seven goals in eight games across all competitions for Atletico this season. With this comeback win, Atletico broke a six-game streak in the Champions League without a victory.
The match had fans on the edge of their seats, highlighting the unpredictability and excitement that the Champions League brings to football enthusiasts around the world.
