La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid were knocked out of the Copa Del Rey on Wednesday by Segunda Division B side Cornella after a 1-0 defeat.
Cornella sits 7th in their group in the Spanish Segunda Division B Group 3 table with 11 points from 9 games played so far.
They have won just 3 of their league games, drew two and lost the rest. However, their Cup form is brilliant beating Marino 1-0 in the last round before the home clash with Diego Someone’s men.
Atletico Madrid had also beaten Cardassar 3-0 in the previous round and were favourites in the game on Wednesdays after their run of form since the start of the season which has seen them level on points with Real Madrid at the top of the log.
Adrian Jimenez Gomez’s 7th-minute goal was more than enough to see the home side through to the next round at the expense of the La Liga leaders who before the game were on a 5-match winning streak.
In fact, Atlético Madrid has only lost twice this season, a 4-0 thrashing against Bayern in the UEFA Champions League and a 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in the Madrid Derby in December.
Meanwhile, things only got worse for Atletico when defender Ricard Sanchez was red-carded in the 62nd minute for a second bookable offence.
Atletico Madrid will now turn attention back to the La Liga and the UEFA Champions League which seems to be the priority of Diego Simeone after he rested a couple of first-team players including Luis Suarez and Yannick Carrasco from the cup tie.
Up next for Atlético Madrid is Atlético Bilbao and Sevilla’s visit to the Wanda Metropolitano on the 9th and 12th of January, respectively, in the La Liga.
