Getafe’s plans to secure Mason Greenwood’s services on a permanent basis have met opposition, with fellow La Liga club Atletico Madrid contacting Manchester United for the on-loan forward.
The 22-year-old has been enjoying a revival at Getafe after a turbulent period where he faced trial for charges of sexual assault and domestic violence. However, those charges against him were dropped, and he was loaned straight to Getafe by Manchester United for fears of fan backlash.
Greenwood still has a contract at Manchester United till 2025, but after impressing with the La Liga club, where he has registered five goals and four assists for Getafe this season, other clubs have turned their attention to him.
Aside from Atletico Madrid, Barcelona has also shown intentions despite the fact that Brazilian youngster Victor Roque joined the club in December.
It’s now a tussle for Getafe, who were said to be ready to pay £40 Million to Manchester United for the player who is expected to make a permanent move in 2024.
That amount may not be an issue for both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, but Getafe president Angel Torres is convinced Geta can reach an agreement with Manchester United to sell the player to them.
“We had a video conference a few days ago [with Manchester United]. Almost every month, we talk to see how he is. The boy is super happy. Now he is there, in England. The family, too. They know we are interested in him staying one more year and I think we are on the right track.” Angel Torres said.
The forward himself is interested in a permanent move but Getafe has company in trying to secure his services with Barcelona interested in handing the number ten jersey that Messi once wore at Camp Nou to Mason Greenwood.
