Argentina and Poland will clash on Wednesday in a must-win clash for both sides in their bid to qualify for the round of 16.
After a shock 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia in their first match of the group stage, Argentina revived their world cup hopes with a 2-0 victory over Mexico thanks to a spirited performance from Messi.
However, that win would not be enough, especially if Saudi Arabia gets a win against Mexico and Poland gets a point from them. That will mean the Poles will move through in second alongside the Asians, who would win the group.
The last time both teams met was in a friendly international in 2011, which Poland won 2-1. Saudi Arabia may have halted Argentina’s 36-match unbeaten run, but they are still one of the favorites to win the group and the competition.
Poland saw Robert Lewandowski score his first World Cup goal last time against Saudi Arabia in a 2-0; the task is simple for Poland, a draw will see them through to round sixteen, irrespective of whatever happens between Mexico and Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, chances for Mexico to qualify to depend on a win and hopes that Argentina will beat Poland by a wide margin.
For Wednesday, Saudi Arabia and Mexico will play, while Argentina hopes to upstage Poland at the top of group C.
In Group D, Australia and Denmark will hope to cancel each other out for the second spot in the group after France secured a round of 16 spots with a 2-1 win over Denmark.
France was the first team to secure progress out of the group stage after beating Australia and Denmark 4-1 and 2-1, respectively.
Tunisia’s slim chance of progression lies in beating France by a big margin and hoping Denmark and Australia play a goalless draw in the group D’s second game
