Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglu has revealed that he fully supports the club’s decision to appeal the severity of the ban placed on the Uruguayan midfielder for a racial slur on his club teammate, Heung-Min Son, on international duty.

The 27-year-old Uruguay international was handed a seven-match ban by the Football Association earlier this week for comments he made on a Uruguayan television in June about the South Korean star.

However, Spurs have decided to appeal the FA decision while the manager says the midfielder made a mistake with the comments but still remains a great person despite the incident.

“I spoke to him in the lead-up [to the FA’s decision], and as I said, he understands he’s made a mistake, and he’s prepared to accept whatever penalty comes his way. We as a club are going to support him because the one thing that’s undeniable to me – because I know him – is that he’s an outstanding person, an unbelievable teammate, and a person of the utmost character who’s made a mistake.” Postecoglu said.

The North Londoners have appealed the punishment meted out by the FA although they accept that the player is guilty, they believe the punishment was too severe.

Bentancur went ahead and apologized to his teammate verbally, revealing that he never intended to offend him. Nevertheless, the FA’s fine means that he will miss seven domestic games for Tottenham, although he remains available for their UEFA Europa League matches.

Bentancur will be out of the following Premier League matches against Manchester City over the weekend, including Liverpool and Chelsea, and a Carabao Cup quarter-final match against Manchester United.

Tottenham are currently tenth on the table with sixteen points from as many games so far this season. They sit in seventh place on the Europa League table, nine points and three points away from the top of the table.
