Manchester United came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 at Old Trafford, extending their unbeaten run against the Saints to 16 Premier League matches. Amad Diallo scored the first hat-trick of his club career, with all three goals coming in the final 10 minutes of the game.
Southampton started positively and took the lead on 43 minutes through Manuel Ugarte’s own goal. The Saints continued to dominate in the second half, with Kamaldeen Sulemana missing a golden opportunity to double their lead. However, United’s pressure eventually paid off, and they leveled the score in the 82nd minute through Amad’s first goal.
The Ivorian’s equalizer was followed by two more goals in the final minutes of the game. Amad played a one-two with Christian Eriksen before volleying home emphatically for his second goal, and then completed his hat-trick at the death, capitalizing on Taylor Harwood-Bellis’s sloppy touch to score with ease.
The win was Manchester United’s first home league victory since early December and moved them up to 12th in the table. Southampton, on the other hand, saw their winless away run in the Premier League stretch to 18 matches.
The Saints had started the game brightly, with Sulemana and Tyler Dibling causing problems for the United defense. However, they were ultimately unable to hold on to their lead and were punished by Amad’s clinical finishing.
“In football, you have to believe. We believed until the end and are very happy to win this game. We drew with Arsenal and Liverpool, so the confidence was there. We are very happy. Maybe one of the best weeks of my life. I am very happy for this win. This team deserved to win this game, so I am very happy.” Diallo said.
The result was a bitter pill for Southampton to swallow, but a welcome boost for Manchester United. The Red Devils will be looking to build on this momentum in their upcoming games, while the Saints will be seeking to end their away drought.
Meanwhile, Manchester City have reached a verbal agreement with Egyptian and Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush.
Marmoush has impressed in the Bundesliga this season with Frankfurt, the team he joined from Wolfsburg in 2023 on a free transfer, scoring 15 goals as many games.
