For weeks there had been speculation about the continuity of coach Alvaro Cervera at Cadiz.
The club’s results were not as expected, and today they are at the bottom of the LaLiga table.
Throughout December, the club’s hierarchy said they supported Cervera and that they were not thinking of changing him.
But this week, it became known that Cadiz has fired Cervera.
Club president Manuel Vizcaino announced Cervera’s departure, which unleashed the fans’ fury. In fact, several fans protested in front of the stadium, demanding Vizcaino’s dismissal.
Vizcaino said that he is not worried about the fans’ reaction and that he is doing what is best for the club.
At the press conference to present the Alma Cadista platform, Vizcaino was asked why the fans don’t love him as much as Cervera, and he said “Alvaro came from outside like me and is a very dear person. I can’t make a decision based on how people react.
The club is already working under new coach Sergio Gonzalez.
Gonzalez made his coaching debut in the First Division in 2014 with Espanyol. Shortly after, he signed for Real Valladolid (2017-18), achieving promotion to the top flight and completing three more seasons in LaLiga Santander, until he ended his stint on June 30.
Cervera is remembered as an iconic figure of the club, as the coach arrived in Segunda B and led the team to LaLiga SmartBank, and a few years later, to the LaLiga Santander.
Most of the club’s fans are saddened by the news. However, in his last press conference, Cervera said that although he appreciates the fans’ gesture, the important thing is to support the club, as he is now past history.
