Tottenham’s new head coach appears to have no plans for winger Steven Bergwijn. In fact, since the Italian coach arrived in the capital of London, he has only said two words to the player.
Bergwijn came to Spurs in January 2020 from PSV Eindhoven for £ 26.7million. In his first season with the club, the player enjoyed many minutes of action with 16 appearances and 3 goals.
But in 2021, the player was slowly falling into oblivion, with Jose Mourinho relegating him to the bench. The arrival of Antonio Conte has not changed the player’s situation, and it seems that the coach has no plans for him.
The lack of action is making the player reconsider his situation and want to return to the Netherlands.
Ajax is very interested in taking over the player’s services, and it looks like they will attempt a move in January.
It seems that Conte has never been a fan of Bergwijn, as Inter Milan tried to sign the player, but Conte said he didn’t need it.
Although Bergwijn seems to have no future at Spurs, leaving his current club may not be so easy. The club invested a hefty chip sum for him just last year, and they are likely to want to get some of the money back.
According to reports from the Netherlands, Ajax intends to take the player on loan in January; however, it is unlikely that the Spurs will give him up without a purchase option clause.
According to Mike Verweij, a sports reporter from the Netherlands, Ajax needs to strengthen their front line in January since Haller would lose due to the African Cup. This situation leaves the club with few options to face difficult matches against Utrecht and PSV in the local league.
