Barcelona forward Sergio Aguero has revealed that he is proud of what he has achieved in his career as he announced his retirement to Camp Nou on Wednesday afternoon.
The former Manchester City forward was watched by his manager at the Etihad stadium Pep Guardiola as he made the emotional closure to his career.
Sergio Aguero suffered heart problems during Barcelona’s 1-1 draw against Alaves in the La Liga in October. The Argentine striker said he is taking the decision because of his health after being informed that he might not be able to compete at the highest level after the physical test.
The striker explained that he remains proud of what he has achieved despite being told the big news.
“I’m proud of the career I’ve had and am fortunate it is happening to me now rather than before. I don’t know what awaits me in the next life but I know there are a lot of people who love me and want the best for me.” Aguero said.
Aguero is the fourth player on the list of highest goals scorers in the Premier League behind Newcastle Legend Alan Shearer, Wayne Rooney and Andrew Cole.
Nevertheless, his 184 goals in 275 games make him the Premier league’s highest-scoring overseas player, nine goals more than Thierry Henry. He also won the Premier League with Manchester City, among other titles.
However, it was at La Liga club Atletico Madrid that he broke through after shining at the 2007 FIFA U20 World Cup with Argentina. Three years prior, he scored his first senior goal for Independiente in Argentina. From there, he moved to Atletico Madrid, where he scored 1010 goals in 234 matches, winning the Europa League.
His last career goal came against Real Madrid in the El Clasico earlier this season.
