AC Milan will have to win or draw their last game of the season before they can celebrate winning the 2020-21 Serie A season.
This is following Inter Milan’s 3-1 win at Cagliari.
The Diavolo had already won their week 37 fixture defeating Atalanta 2-0 to maintain their position at the summit, leading their arch-rivals with five points.
But Inter have reduced the gap to two points heading into the last fixtures of the season after securing a vital win against Cagliari on Sunday night.
AC Milan recorded maximum points against Le Dea through goals from Rafael Leao and Theo Hernandez. The duo secured the points with two fantastic counter-attacking goals.
With much at stake at San Siro, the Rossoneri have no other choice but to take a giant step towards the Scudetto against Atalanta, aiming for a Europa League spot.
After both teams tested each other, Stefano Pioli in the second made an inspired double substitution, and Junior Messias provided an assist with almost his first touch. He sent Leao to blaze forward and drill through Musso’s legs to give Milan the lead.
Hernandez then secured the result with a remarkable run he started on the edge of his penalty area. The left-back shook off five players until he slipped the finish into the far bottom corner.
In the other clash, Inter sends the fight for the Scudetto down to the wire as the winner will be decided on the final day.
Meanwhile, Milan only needs a draw to win the title when they play away against Sassuolo while Inter hosts Sampdoria.
After several efforts at Cagliari’s goal, Inter eventually opened the scoring account through Matteo Darmian. The right-back out-leaped Charalampos Lykogiannis to steer home Ivan Perisic’s cross back across Cragno into the far top corner.
Lautaro Martinez, who has been unlucky, finally got his goal in the second half to double Inter’s lead. The Argentine striker sprang the offside trap from Nicolò Barella’s long ball over the top and then hold off Giorgio Altare and drill through Cragno’s legs.
The hosts then reduced the deficit to 1 through Lykogiannis, who hit a screamer with his left foot that took a slight deflection off Skrinniar.
While Cagliari, who are on the verge of relegation, were looking for an equaliser, Inter got the third through Martinez again with a sensational finish.
After springing the offside trap, Roberto Gagliardini rolled the ball across for the Argentine’s magnificent first-time dink over the on-rushing Cragno.
