The WBC has said that they would be interested in seeing an undisputed championship fight in the heavyweight division between current WBC champion, Daniel Dubois and the winner of the Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury bout next month, stating that such a fight would be “sensational”.
Usyk held the title as undisputed champion for a few weeks after defeating Fury back in May before he gave up the WBC title to Dubois, who then successfully defended it against Anthony Joshua. The heavyweight division had been without an undisputed champion for over two decades before Usyk won it and his short reign has led to calls for an undisputed champion battle happening sooner than later.
Since the titles are in the possession of two people, it would be very easy on paper to arrange such a bout, but a lot of things would have to be taken into consideration to bring the bout to life.
Speaking on this, Mauricio Sulaiman, president of the WBC, said that the organization would support all good matchups and they are currently interested in seeing Dubois fight either Usyk or Fury: “We are not promoters, so we cannot promote fights. We have been, as the WBC, extremely supportive of unification fights and undisputed champions. I would love to see Dubois fight the winner, and without a doubt, that fight is sensational.”
Sulaiman also said that the mandatory fighter rule was instituted to give the best fighter a chance to go against the champion, and that Usyk and Fury are currently two of the best fighters in the division. This means that the WBC may be ready to set aside their mandatory rule to make the undisputed bout happen.
According the Sulaiman, the WBC has always been interested in undisputed bouts, as they tried to make it happen in the past: “We were always trying to make [Deontay] Wilder against Joshua for the undisputed at one time, then Fury against Joshua, then Fury against Usyk.”
The latest statement from the WBC sounds like an endorsement for a possible undisputed bout in the future, as they have also said they would not be naming a mandatory fighter anytime soon. This makes the December 21 fight between Usyk and Fury more interesting since the winner has all but been assured a shot at claiming all four titles when they go up against Dubois.
