Tyson Fury has announced his retirement from boxing. News of his retirement broke after a brief video he uploaded on social media on Monday, where he stated, “I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast”. This announcement comes just weeks after his unanimous decision loss to Oleksandr Usyk last December, Fury’s second loss to him, which ended his hopes of reclaiming his status as heavyweight champion. 

Fury’s career has been marked by both triumph and controversy. He boasts an impressive record of 34 wins, two losses, and one draw. The Gypsy King first gained prominence by defeating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015, ending the Ukrainian’s long reign and becoming the new heavyweight champion. 

This is not the first time Fury would announce his retirement, but in the past, he’s always returned to the ring afterwards. It’s unclear if he will be returning this time around. 

His latest retirement has sparked skepticism among fans and analysts alike. Many recall his history of comebacks and speculate whether this decision is final or merely a tactic to negotiate potential fights, particularly against fellow Briton Anthony Joshua. Promoter Frank Warren expressed support for Fury’s decision: “If that’s what he wants to do, that’s great. He’s done everything he can do.”

Fury’s legacy in boxing is almost non-debatable. He unified multiple heavyweight titles and was involved in some of the sport’s most memorable bouts, defeating some of the top-ranked men along the way, including Derek Chisora, Otto Wallin, Deontay Wilder, and Dillian Whyte. At this point, questions linger about his future endeavours, whether he will remain retired this time, and what possible fixture or offer could  bring him back to the ring. But as far as being an achiever goes, Fury left no stone unturned in his rise to the top, and if this is truly the end, then he retires as one of the best to ever do it.
