Former pro boxer, Floyd Mayweather, has revealed plans to face Conor McGregor in a rematch next year. Mayweather and McGregor had their first fight in 2017, and Mayweather won the fight by a technical knockout in the 10th round. The fight was added to Mayweather’s 50-0 professional record, and he has not fought a professional match since then.
Mayweather, who has an exhibition match this weekend in Tokyo, revealed that they have not decided if the match against McGregor would be an exhibition match or a real fight, adding that he would not like to fight any fight that would put him in harm. He said: “I want to go out there this weekend in Tokyo and have fun [against Mikuru Asakura]. Then I have another exhibition in Dubai in November and me and Conor McGregor in 2023.
“We don’t know if it’s going to be an exhibition or a real fight. But there’s been talks of both. I would prefer an exhibition.”
On why he prefers an exhibition match, he replied: “I am not into fights where I am going to take any real punishment.
“So, guys like Conor McGregor and guys that don’t really hit hard, such as YouTubers or UFC guys, I don’t really mind colliding with those kinds of individuals, but nothing where I am going to put myself in a position where I am going to harm myself or hurt myself.”
Since fighting McGregor, Mayweather has fought three exhibition matches, winning one and not having any score in the other two. Mayweather mentioned fighting YouTubers because he has been involved with one in the past. Last year, Mayweather, who was 44 then, fought Logan Paul, a popular YouTuber, and brother of Jake Paul, who is also a boxer.
There are no comments yet from McGregor to this announcement. But back in May, he revealed that he would make a comeback to boxing as soon as he returns to the UFC. McGregor has not fought in the UFC since July 2021, after announcing his retirement, but it now seems he is ready to make a double comeback to combat sports.
