Legendary promoter Bob Arum has sent a message to Deontay Wilder regarding his suggestion to Tyson Fury to step down for his scheduled unification fight.
Wilder is determined to step into the ring to battle Andy Ruiz Jr. next year, prompting him to propose to Fury to waive his plans for a match. Bob Arum expressed his displeasure in Wilder, rubbishing the American professional boxer’s suggestions.
Tyson Fury is a name that rings in the ears of every boxing fan – a WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight champion. It really cannot get any better than that! The 31-year-old will lock horns with Anthony Joshua once again, this time in Saudi Arabia on the 7th of December.
On the other hand, the rebel Wilder, a WBC champ in his own right, is yet to set a date for his intended rematch against Luis Ortiz later this year. Ortiz got defeated the 33-year-old American last time out.
Now, Wilder has hinted that if this encounter ends up in a repeat of the previous result, he would want Fury to step aside so that he could unify the division. He even went as far as insinuating that the Gypsy King would be happy to follow suit.
However, Bob Arum, who co-promotes Tyson Fury, has condemned Wilder for his suggestion, insisting that the highly anticipated rematch between Fury and Joshua will go ahead as planned earlier. The blockbuster encounter is scheduled to hold next year February.
When asked about his thoughts on Wilder’s claims, Arum spoke to the interview in a candid voice, “That is the plan,” referring to Fury’s Joshua rematch.
“Yeah, I read Wilder’s comments. There is a contract, and I don’t know if he thinks that’s possible. Wilder says a lot of things that he doesn’t mean just for effect. However, that fight is already in the books,” the promoter concluded.
Also, Arum revealed he expects the winner of the Ruiz – Joshua clash to brawl IBF mandatory Kubrat Pulev afterward. He reiterated that he wants this clash no later than May 2020, even with no unification fight taking place.
