Angelo Leo was scheduled to headline the August 1 SHOWTIME boxing card against fellow unbeaten fighter Stephen Fulton Jr. but the latter tested positive for COVID-19 and was replaced by Tramaine Williams.
Leo beat Williams via unanimous decision at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut to claim the WBO junior featherweight championship. Emanuel Navarrete had vacated the belt in early July.
“Beyond Hurt !!! I won’t be fighting for the world title Saturday night due to me testing positive for COVID. I never got anything easy, just a setback for a crazy return, pray for me if you can,” Fulton said about not being able to fight Leo.
Stephen Fulton Jr. (18-0, 8 KOs) has victories over eight undefeated fighters. Angelo Leo was the third straight unbeaten fighter that he was going to face.
As for Angelo Leo, he is also a very talented, undefeated contender. He is part of Floyd Mayweather’s stable and so far he’s passed every test, with wins against many tough fighters in the division. Leo is now the fifth World Champion boxer from New Mexico.
“It’s real big, you know it’s real big. It feels great to be alongside the likes of Danny Romero, Johnny Tapia, Holly Holm, Bobby Foster, and Austin Trout. It feels real good to put on for my city like that. I know in Albuquerque they are really happy and really proud. You know, I just want to let everyone know that I do appreciate them,” Leo explained.
Being a world champion was Leo’s dream since he got into boxing at a young age. Now that he has even more aspirations for his future.
“This is one of my goals right here, to become a world champion was one of my goals, but ultimately I want to have multiple titles in multiple divisions. So, this is just the beginning right here, this gave me a lot of motivation and a lot of confidence, but with that being said I have a target on my back now. everybody wants me, everybody is gunning for me, So with that, I got to work even harder,” Leo said.
