The Golden State Warriors approached this season with a lot of promise but it ended very unfortunately as they failed to make it to the playoffs after losing consecutive games in the play ins. The Warriors front office need to take some crucial decisions as they have to build a strong supporting cast for their talismanic duo of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson known as the ‘Splash Brothers’.
This offseason is very crucial for the Warriors as their star players are ageing and are gradually going past their prime. Hence they would like to use this period to their advantage and compete at the highest level, unlike this season. For that to happen they need to add a few important pieces to their lineup that can help the duo progress to the top in the coming years.
Curry who had an exceptional season this time out is already 33-years old. Yet he is still playing at an MVP level and his career average shows an even upward graph. He signed a five-year contract extension in 2017 with the Warriors that got him $201.2 million. The current contract is coming to an end and that makes the upcoming season all the more crucial.
In a recent interview, the Warriors’ assistant GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. accepted that they are updated on his window. The executive detailed, “The one thing about Steph is with the way he takes care of his body, with his skill level, we think his window is going to be a lot bigger than some other people do. So, we take that into account, but as far as the draft goes, you have to be a little careful about saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to draft a guy that is going to be ready to play.’ It’s hard enough to draft a guy that is going to be a good NBA player, and now you’re going to go ahead and say, ‘We’re going to draft a guy that is going to be impactful in his rookie year.’”
The Warriors have a #7 pick which they got via Timberwolves and a #14 pick of their own and they will look to cash in those during the offseason. The Warriors are also waiting for the return for Klay Thompson, he will return after a long injury setback.
The GSW front office knows that they need to take advantage of Draymond Green, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson’s final few years. Hence they will keep no stone unturned in this offseason.
