Speculation surrounding Damian Lillard’s future in the NBA continues to generate buzz, particularly regarding a potential blockbuster trade that would send the Portland Trail Blazers star to the Miami Heat.
Although the anticipated deal has not yet materialized, recent murmurs within the team indicate that this situation could soon change, as reported by Aaron J. Fentress of The Oregonian.
During an episode of The Oregonian’s “Blazer Focused” podcast, Fentress revealed that the negotiations between Portland and Miami have reached a significant point, with both parties being “pretty close” to finalizing a trade that would relocate Lillard to South Beach.
Fentress clarified that his report was based on well-informed analysis derived from conversations with reliable sources. However, he emphasized that the major sticking point in the ongoing discussions remains the draft compensation.
The Trail Blazers are reportedly seeking at least four first-round picks, and while the Miami Heat possess three of them, the final piece is yet to be secured. It is speculated that young Heat guard Tyler Herro could potentially be included in the deal, possibly being flipped for an additional first-round pick after the trade.
“If [the Blazers] can come out of this with four first-round picks, at least one, if not two young talents, and then salary filler, that should get it done,” Fentress explained on July 12. “I’m told that right now, Miami has three firsts, Herro, filler and maybe a young player already, like willing to go with that. So, the question is finding that fourth [first-round pick].
“And if you don’t want Herro, you just have to find someone to take Herro and give you another first-round pick. Then you’re at four firsts and, then, at least one young player and salary filler, and maybe two young players. So, I’m told it’s pretty close, they just have to work it out.”
Interestingly, Fentress’s remarks came amidst conflicting reports suggesting that the Trail Blazers and Heat are still far from reaching an agreement. Therefore, while the report may excite NBA fans, the exact state of negotiations remains uncertain.
