Thunder Storm into Playoffs After Historic Regular Season Finish

    April 15, 2025

The Oklahoma City Thunder have etched their name into the annals of NBA history with a regular season that defied expectations and shattered records. Finishing with a jaw-dropping 68-14 record, the Thunder not only clinched the top seed in the Western Conference by a staggering 16-game margin but also posted the best point differential in league history.

Oklahoma City’s dominance was unmatched throughout the 82-game season, outscoring opponents by an average of 12.9 points per game. That figure surpasses the previous record of 12.3 set by the legendary 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers. In total, the Thunder outpaced their rivals by 1,055 points — a new benchmark of excellence.

“We can appreciate and be grateful for the things we’ve accomplished and still be hungry,” said head coach Mark Daigneault following the season finale. “Both things can be true.”

The Thunder’s 68 wins tie them for the sixth-best regular season record in NBA history alongside the 1966-67 Philadelphia 76ers and the 1972-73 Boston Celtics. Only five teams have ever won more: the 2015-16 Warriors (73), 1995-96 Bulls (72), 1996-97 Bulls (69), 1971-72 Lakers (69), and the 1966-67 Sixers (68 but with fewer losses).

As history shows, each of those teams made deep playoff runs, with most capturing the NBA championship. Now, Oklahoma City stands on the precipice of potentially joining that elite company, with the title firmly in their sights.

Leading the charge is MVP frontrunner Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, whose leadership and scoring prowess have anchored a young, dynamic squad built on defensive grit and offensive efficiency. Complemented by a talented supporting cast, the Thunder have demonstrated a rare mix of maturity, depth, and cohesion.

“Franchise record for wins is a great accomplishment,” Daigneault added. “It was an unbelievable regular season. A special group of guys that deserve these sort of things.”

Oklahoma City will open its playoff campaign at home on April 20, facing off against the winner of the Western Conference Play-In Tournament, which features Golden State, Sacramento, Dallas, and Memphis. With the Play-In set for April 15–18 and the full postseason tipping off on April 19, the stage is set for what could be a historic playoff run.

After a regular season for the ages, the Thunder now look to turn their dream season into championship glory.
