Suns Shake Up Starting Lineup Amid Struggles and Locker Room Tensions

    January 6, 2025

The Phoenix Suns are making significant changes to their lineup in an attempt to halt a four-game losing streak and salvage a rocky season. According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, shooting guard Bradley Beal and center Jusuf Nurkić will be removed from the starting five ahead of Monday night’s matchup against the Philadelphia 76ers.

Rookie forward Ryan Dunn and veteran center Mason Plumlee are set to replace them. The decision comes amid growing tension within the Suns’ locker room. Haynes reports that players are frustrated with unclear roles and the coaching staff’s ongoing adjustments.

These internal challenges have been exacerbated by the team’s poor performance, leaving the Suns last in the Pacific Division with a 15-18 record after a promising 8-1 start to the season.

The Suns entered the 2024-25 season with lofty expectations following the acquisition of Bradley Beal from the Washington Wizards. Beal joined stars Kevin Durant and Devin Booker to form a Big 3 intended to push Phoenix into championship contention.

However, injuries and chemistry issues have plagued Beal’s tenure, limiting his impact. The Suns are averaging 112.1 points per game but conceding 114.4, a statistic that highlights their defensive vulnerabilities.

Adding to the frustration is the team’s league-high $226.2 million payroll, which has yet to translate into success on the court. Phoenix’s underwhelming performance is particularly glaring when compared to lower-payroll teams finding greater consistency.

    Lineup Changes Offer New Direction

Ryan Dunn, a promising rookie forward, has shown flashes of potential, earning him an opportunity to contribute to the starting lineup. Veteran center Mason Plumlee is expected to bring more defensive stability and rebounding prowess to the team.

Head coach Frank Vogel and his staff are reportedly banking on these changes to spark a turnaround. Vogel faces mounting pressure as the team struggles to find its rhythm amid a crowded Western Conference playoff race.

Phoenix’s three-game road trip started poorly with a 126-108 loss to the Indiana Pacers on Saturday. The Suns previously defeated the 76ers in November, and Monday night’s game presents an opportunity to regain momentum and restore some confidence.

While the adjustments signal a willingness to experiment, the Suns’ broader issues—both on the court and in the locker room—will require more than a lineup tweak to resolve. For a franchise with championship ambitions, the coming weeks may prove decisive for its season.
