Brooklyn Nets has hired Hall of Famer Steve Nash on a 4-year deal to coach the team. It is his first coaching job as Jacque Vaughn remains an assistant.
Nash becomes Nets’ 23rd head coach in their NBA history. Previously, he was with Golden State Warriors as a player development consultant.
Nash will have at his disposal Kevin Durant who is a former MVP and Finals MVP, and Kyrie Irving to thinker his team with.
Brooklyn Nets General manager Sean Marks explained that though the franchise considered many potentials and options, Nash’s choice was easy as he is seen as a leader.
“After meeting with several highly accomplished coaching candidates from diverse backgrounds, we knew we had a difficult decision to make. In Steve, we see a leader, communicator, and mentor who will garner our players’ respect. I have had the privilege to know Steve for many years. One of the great on-court leaders in our game, I have witnessed firsthand his basketball acumen and selfless approach to prioritize team success. His instincts for the game, combined with an inherent ability to communicate with and unite players towards a common goal, will prepare us to compete at the highest levels of the league” Mark was quoted on NBA.
The Nets were reported to want San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich as well as some prominent NBA Coaches.
Brooklyn Nets were ousted by Toronto Raptors in the playoffs, having been led by former coach Vaughn who was without Kevin Durant and Irving, although both players are expected to be back for the 2020-2021 NBA season.
Nash had a remarkable NBA career ranking third in the all-time NBA assist rankings. He played for Los Angeles Lakers, Dallas Mavericks, and Phoenix Suns.
