Stephen A. Smith compares Magic Johnson with Stephen Curry in search of the Greatest Point Guard of All Time

Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry has influenced an entire generation to play like him. Kids these days are following his footsteps of shooting from a distance. He has changed the game of basketball with his unique abilities so much so that even the other players started focusing more on their long-range shooting.

Teams have come up with ways to nullify his effect but Curry is so versatile with his abilities that when he is not scoring, he is often playmaking and helping his team in other ways. But with time, people have hailed him as the ‘Greatest Shooter of All Time’ and he has gladly lived up to the moniker.

The experienced Warriors talisman has given enough performances to be in the conversation of top point guards in the NBA. His ability to shoot the ball and facilitate play makes him one of the strong contenders. Even NBA Analyst Stephen A. Smith feels the same as he puts him in the same strata as Los Angeles Lakers legend Magic Johnson.

Smith feels that Magic is more of the traditional point guard who will be running with the ball constantly and controlling the tempo at which the team will attack. “If you talk about a quintessential point guard, I’ve got the ball in my hands, I’m running the show, I’m conducting the offense, I’m passing, I’m facilitating opportunities for others. In that regard, there is no one better than Magic Johnson,” Smith said on his podcast.

Magic Johnson was simply phenomenal as he was in a league of his own. He won the Finals MVP in his rookie season while playing as a center rather than a point guard, which speaks volumes about his talent and dedication to his team.

Magic was so brilliant with and without the ball that he developed a new style of play in the league. His rivalry with Boston Celtics talisman Larry Bird was always intriguing and kept the rating up for the NBA during that era.

Stephen A. Smith also shares why Curry deserves the recognition that he is receiving for being exceptional for the Warriors and for changing the perception of how the game should be looked at.

“We all know that Steph Curry is the greatest shooter we have ever seen. Have you ever seen him move without the ball? I know that Magic Johnson is the prototypical point guard, but the bottom line is that Steph warrants that level of consideration,” Smith added.

Despite the comparisons and the changes that the Warriors talisman has brought to the game, there’s no way he has dethroned Magic Johnson as the ‘Greatest Point Guard of All Time’. The Lakers talisman had an unreal influence on the game and won his fair share of accolades to justify his exceptional talent.
