The Philadelphia 76ers’ prized free-agent signing, Paul George, left Monday’s preseason game against the Atlanta Hawks after suffering a hyperextended left knee. The injury occurred in the second quarter during a defensive play, causing George’s knee to buckle.
He had scored eight points in 12 minutes before being taken out of the game. Despite the concerning moment, George expressed optimism after the game.
“I felt that it hyperextended, and immediately it was, all right, I need to get taken out and (looked at), but if you ask me, I’m not too concerned about it,” George told The Philadelphia Inquirer.
However, the Sixers have not provided an official timeline for his recovery. The team’s head coach, Nick Nurse, emphasized the cautious approach they will take with George’s health.
“You never want anything to happen to anybody,” Nurse said. “Certainly, just kind of trying to work him into things. He wants to work into things, too. This doesn’t give us a chance to do that. Hopefully, it’ll be ok, so he’s back with us right away.”
George’s injury adds to concerns about the 76ers’ health heading into the 2023-24 season. The team has already been managing Joel Embiid, the reigning NBA MVP, by sitting him out for the rest of the preseason due to “left knee management.”
Philadelphia’s cautious approach reflects their intention to keep their stars healthy for a deep postseason run, which has eluded them in recent years.
The 76ers signed George this summer to a four-year, $212 million contract, making him a key component in their pursuit of an NBA championship. The 33-year-old forward brings a wealth of experience, having been named to six All-NBA teams and averaging 20.8 points over his 14-year career.
George is expected to form a potent trio alongside Embiid and All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey, giving Philadelphia one of the most formidable lineups in the league.
