The New Orleans Pelicans have made a small adjustment to their training camp roster, announcing the addition of guard Adonis Arms while waiving guard Izaiah Brockington. The announcement came via a press release on Tuesday, indicating the Pelicans’ ongoing efforts to fine-tune their roster ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season.
Arms, 26, brings experience from the G League, where he has played for two seasons after going undrafted out of Texas Tech in 2022. Last season, Arms made an impression while playing for the Memphis Hustle, the G League affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies.
Over 42 games, which included Showcase Cup and regular season appearances, Arms averaged 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. His shooting percentages of 45.8% from the field, 39.9% from beyond the arc, and 72% from the free-throw line suggest a well-rounded skill set.
While the addition of Arms to the Pelicans’ roster may raise some eyebrows, it appears to be a calculated move aimed at bolstering the Birmingham Squadron, New Orleans’ G League affiliate. The Squadron acquired Arms’ returning rights in a five-team trade last month, which hints at the Pelicans’ likely plan to waive him before the regular season starts and have him rejoin the Squadron.
This would allow him to continue his development while remaining within the Pelicans’ system. Should Arms spend at least 60 days with the Squadron, he will be eligible for an Exhibit 10 bonus of up to $77,500.
On the other hand, the Pelicans have decided to part ways with Izaiah Brockington, who signed with the team on an Exhibit 10 deal just last week. Brockington, who spent the 2023-24 season with Birmingham, is expected to follow a similar path as Arms, potentially rejoining the G League after his waiver.
Both players are expected to compete and develop within the Pelicans’ G League system, keeping them in the fold as potential call-ups during the season.
The Pelicans’ training camp roster now stands at 21 players, as the team continues its preparations for the upcoming NBA season.
