The Orlando Magic announced Sunday that guard Markelle Fultz has suffered a fracture in his big left toe. The official press release indicate “no surgery required” as he has been placed in a walking boot.
“Orlando Magic guard Markelle Fultz has suffered a fracture in his big left toe,” the press release from Orlando read. “No surgery is required. He has been placed in a walking boot and his return to play will depend on how he responds to rehabilitation and treatment. Fultz suffered the injury during a preseason workout prior to returning to Orlando and imaging confirmed the fracture.”
Fultz suffered the injury during a preseason workout.
The team said his “return to play will depend on how he responds to rehabilitation and treatment.”
Fultz has been been affected by injuries seemingly constantly in the last two seasons because of a torn ACL back in January 2021. He returned to the Magic this past February where he averaged close to 11 points and 5.5 assists per game in 18 games played.
He is entering the second season of his three-year, $50 million contract extension that was signed in December 2020.
Fultz was originally selected No. 1 overall in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.
He has played in 131 games overall so far, averaging 10.9 points, 4.8 assists, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. He averages just under 25 minutes played per game.
Cole Anthony and Jalen Suggs will have to step up in Fultz’s absence.
According to the mayo Clinic, broken toes like this usually heal in four to six weeks.
Orlando officially start training camp on 27 September at the new AdventHealth Training Center.
Orlando’s preseason opener is 3 October against the Memphis Grizzlies. They will tip-off the regular season 19 October against the Detroit Pistons.
