NBA coach of the year for 2020, Nick Nurse, has signed a multi-year contract extension with Toronto Raptors according to several NBA sources.
The franchise made the announcement on Tuesday, even though the details of the deal wasn’t disclosed.
Nurse led the team to the NBA championship in 2018/2019 season as well as a 53-19 mark and a franchise-record .736 winning percentage in 2019-20, according to the NBA. He went on to win the NBA Coach of the Year in 2020 on the basis of the team’s performance this season.
He stated that being at the team for seven years makes Toronto home for him, and he wants to be there for many years more to come.
Meanwhile, Masai Ujiri, who is the president of the Raptors, stated that the franchise had grown confidence in Nurse, having achieved what he has in the last two seasons.
“Our confidence in Nick continues to grow, and part of that comes from what we’ve experienced together. The past two seasons have been unlike any other in our team’s history – first, winning our championship, and then navigating a global pandemic and committing long-term to the fight against racism and for social justice. Nick has proved that he can coach on the court and lead in life, and we’re looking forward to accomplishing great things in the future.” Raptors president Masai Ujiri said.
The achievements of Nurse cannot be underestimated, having led the Raptors to seven straight seasons of the Eastern Conference playoffs. However, this season, he fell short in the semi-finals to the Boston Celtics.
According to the NBA, Nurse won three Eastern Conference Coach of the Month honours, and he was the coach of Team Giannis at the 2020 NBA All-Star Game in Chicago.
