Chris Paul is building his own legacy in the NBA and he is undoubtedly one of the best point guards of this generation. He has immediately improved each of the teams he has joined throughout his career. Although one may argue that Steph Curry has achieved more than Paul but CP3 redefined the role of a point guard way before the Warriors talisman.
Currently, with the Phoenix Suns, Paul leapfrogged Magic Johnson on the all-time assists list. He currently is in the sixth position and with the way he is playing he may end up right at the top of the assists pile. Vince Carter feels he will be in the top five very soon.
“It’s so tough. If he’s not in the top five, he’s on the way. He’s making a case for it right now. He’s 35-36 and what he’s done. Some people say he’s reinvented himself. I think he’s just gotten new life and fresh air. I mean, he likes the talent, he has a lot of talent around him. You out the right talent around CP3. You have shooters, you have defenders, and then he’s going out there and he’s still scoring and being Chris Paul that we’ve known and loved.”
Carter added, “It’s hard to say who’s in the top five in my opinion. I’d like to wait till it’s all said and done. I think when it’s all said and done and he’s done playing, he’ll be right there.”
Chris Paul is surely in the top ten point guards ever to play in the NBA. He may even get into the top five but he is behind the likes of Magic Johnson, Stephen Curry and Isiah Thomas as all of them have NBA Championships to their name and some even have won a lot more. Magic Johnson has won it all, he has multiple titles, finals MVP, regular-season MVP while Curry has also won the title but is yet to clinch the finals MVP, Isiah Thomas has not won the regular season MVP.
Even after going through the elites a lot of people may bring the likes of Jason Kidd, John Stockton and others into the equation. But considering the fact that Paul is still going strong makes a lot of people feel that he will be a top-five at the point of his retirement. But if he manages to win a Championship then his claim as a top-five point guard gains more weight.
