The NBA is set to revolutionize its draft format in 2024 by extending it to a two-night event, as announced on Wednesday. This significant change reflects the league’s commitment to enhancing both the team decision-making process and the overall fan experience.
The first round of the draft will unfold at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York, on June 26. The following night, June 27, will see the second round taking place at ESPN’s Seaport District Studios in New York City. This expansion not only brings a new geographical dimension to the draft but also allows a more focused spotlight on each round.
Joe Dumars, the NBA’s Executive Vice President and Head of Basketball Operations, explained the rationale behind this shift. “Based on feedback about the NBA Draft format from basketball executives around the league and my own experience in draft rooms, we believe that teams will benefit from being able to regroup between rounds and having additional time to make decisions during the second round,” he stated. This approach indicates a strategic move to enhance team strategies and deliberations.
Dumars also highlighted the benefits for NBA fans, saying, “Two nights of primetime coverage will also enhance the viewing experience for our fans and further showcase the draftees.” This expanded format is set to offer a more in-depth and engaging viewing experience for basketball enthusiasts around the world.
The coverage of both nights will begin at 8 p.m. ET. The first round will be aired on ABC, ESPN, and the ESPN app, while the second round will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN and the ESPN app.
In terms of the draft mechanics, there will be a five-minute interval between picks in the first round, maintaining the existing pace. However, the second round will see an increase in decision time, with four minutes between selections, a notable increase from the previous two-minute intervals. This adjustment aims to provide teams with more time for critical decision-making during the later stages of the draft.
