The Dallas Mavericks have signed their talisman Luka Doncic in a supermax rookie deal. The Slovenian has been exceptional for the franchise and therefore no one deserves this more than him. He simply guided the Mavs to the playoffs in the last couple of seasons and now he has the aim to win the NBA Championships with the Mavs.
It was way back in 2011 when they went past the first round in the postseason and it was the year when they won the title. They are looking to replicate that form with Luka Doncic taking the centre stage in place of Dirk Nowitzki.
But for that Doncic needs more players who can back him up. The Mavs front office needs to act very swiftly to bring in more talent to their roster to increase their bench strength and also compete with teams like Los Angeles Lakers and Brooklyn Nets for the NBA Championships in the upcoming season.
In a recent interview, Jalen Rose highlighted how Mavs management went to Slovenia to offer the deal to Doncic. He has agreed to a massive five-year deal that will keep him at the franchise till 2026. Rose lauded Tim Hardaway Jr for his performances last season but he also raised concerns for the Mavs heading into the next season with the intention to win the NBA title. He said, “They’re gonna need one more All-Star caliber player to me to catapult themselves into contention status in the Western Conference. But we saw it this year, with Covid, with injuries, we’re going back to an 82 games schedule, there are crazy things that happen during a regular season.”
“The Lakers as an older bunch, they’re not gonna have #1 or maybe even a #2 seed. So that’s gonna leave room for the teams like the Jazz, and for the Denver Nuggets, and all of those teams who are a lot younger that’s gonna play the marathon game. So it’s interesting to see how it works out for the Mavs, but as long as you can get Luka signed, you do that immediately,” Rose added.
The NBA Analyst feels that the Mavs will need to sign more players to compete with more stacked teams like the Lakers, Bucks and Nets for the upcoming season.
