Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown has solidified his future with the team by signing a three-year, $30 million contract extension. The agreement, first revealed by various news outlets over a month ago, was officially confirmed on Wednesday.
“I love being in Sacramento and I am excited for this next chapter,” Brown expressed in a release, highlighting his enthusiasm for continuing his journey with the Kings.
The Kings have found a sense of stability under Brown’s leadership, a notable shift from the constant turnover that plagued the team in the past. Since the departure of Rick Adelman in 2006, Sacramento cycled through 11 head and interim coaches in 16 seasons. Brown’s presence has been a stabilizing force for the franchise.
“Mike has done a tremendous job leading our team and this extension is well deserved,” Kings general manager Monte McNair stated. “His commitment to success is second to none and I look forward to building on the foundation he’s helped establish in Sacramento.”
Under Brown’s guidance, the Kings have experienced a resurgence. In the 2022-23 season, he was honoured as the NBA Coach of the Year after leading the Kings to their first playoff appearance since the Adelman era. Although the team was eliminated in the play-in round this season, the achievement marked a significant milestone for the franchise.
In two seasons with Brown at the helm, the Kings have posted a 94-70 regular season record, demonstrating consistent improvement and competitiveness.
The 54-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the Kings. His career coaching record stands at 441-286, encompassing six seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, parts of two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, and two seasons with Sacramento. His playoff record is equally impressive, with a 50-40 mark.
One of the highlights of Brown’s career was leading the Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in 2007, where they faced a formidable San Antonio Spurs team and were ultimately swept. Despite the loss, Brown’s ability to guide his team to the Finals showed his coaching acumen on the biggest stage.
With Brown’s contract extension, the Kings are poised to build on the momentum generated over the past two seasons. The team’s progress under his leadership has reignited hope among fans and positioned Sacramento as a competitive force in the NBA.
