Luka Doncic delivered a sensational 45-point performance—31 in the first half—in his emotional return to Dallas, but it was the Los Angeles Lakers who emerged victorious with a 112-97 win over the Mavericks on Wednesday night.
Doncic, traded to the Lakers in February in a blockbuster deal that sent Anthony Davis to Dallas, was greeted with a heartfelt video tribute and thunderous applause from Mavericks fans. Despite his fiery start, the Lakers countered with their own firepower as LeBron James tallied 27 points and seven rebounds, and Rui Hachimura chipped in with 15 points. The win strengthened Los Angeles’ hold on third place in the Western Conference.
Dallas, meanwhile, still clinched a play-in berth later in the night following the Phoenix Suns’ loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Naji Marshall had 23 points and eight assists for the Mavericks, while Davis—facing his former team—added 13 points, 11 boards, and six assists.
In Denver, the Nuggets responded strongly to the sudden firing of coach Michael Malone, snapping a four-game skid by defeating the Kings 124-116. Interim coach David Adelman saw Nikola Jokic record a triple-double (20 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists) to keep Denver’s postseason hopes alive. Zach LaVine scored 27 for Sacramento.
The Thunder, resting four starters including Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, still dominated the Suns 125-112 behind Jalen Williams’ 33 points. The loss eliminated Phoenix from playoff contention and extended their losing streak to eight. Bradley Beal and Devin Booker combined for 45 points for the Suns.
The Clippers also stayed in the playoff race with a 134-117 win over the Rockets, powered by James Harden’s 35 points and Ivica Zubac’s first career triple-double. Kawhi Leonard scored 22 before exiting at halftime with a groin issue.
Other notable performances included Jonathan Mogbo’s triple-double in Toronto’s 126-96 win over Charlotte, Franz Wagner’s 23 points in Orlando’s 96-76 win over an undermanned Boston, and Jeff Dowtin Jr.’s career-high 30 points to lift Philadelphia over Washington.
In Chicago, Josh Giddey’s triple-double (28 points, 16 rebounds, 11 assists) led the Bulls past the Heat 119-111, nudging them ahead for the East’s ninth seed.
Meanwhile, rookie Kyle Filipowski’s 30 points and 18 boards powered Utah past Portland in overtime, while Harrison Barnes’ buzzer-beater sealed a thrilling 114-111 victory for the Spurs over the Warriors, jeopardizing Golden State’s shot at a top-four finish.
With just days left in the regular season, the race for playoff spots is heating up—and Wednesday’s action showed just how intense it’s getting.
