Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has hinted that his latest contract extension could be his final one, sparking speculation about the future of one of the greatest players in NBA history. In a candid interview with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, James admitted uncertainty about signing another deal after his current contract expires.
“I mean, it could be [the last contract I will ever sign],” James said during the interview. “I’d never sit up here and say, ‘Oh, maybe not.’ Yeah, it could be. Easily. But we’ll see what happens.”
James, who recently turned 39, secured a two-year deal worth $101.4 million with the Lakers, extending his tenure with the team until 2026. This contract includes a player option for the 2025-26 season, providing James with flexibility regarding his future in the league. If he plays out the remainder of his current contract, he will surpass Vince Carter for the most seasons played in NBA history, marking his 23rd season.
Throughout his illustrious career, James has set numerous records and achieved milestones that few can match. He is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, a four-time MVP, and has won championships with three different teams: the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Lakers. His 20th All-Star appearance during the 2023-24 season set a new NBA record, further cementing his legacy as one of the sport’s all-time greats.
James’s performance on the court remains exceptional. Last season, he averaged 25.7 points and 8.3 assists per game, with impressive shooting splits of 54.0% from the field, 41.0% from three-point range, and 75.0% from the free-throw line. This marked the second season in his career in which he connected on at least 40 percent of his three-point attempts, showing his continued evolution as a player.
Adding to the excitement of his upcoming season, James will have the unique opportunity to play alongside his son, Bronny James. The Lakers selected Bronny with the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft and subsequently signed him to a four-year deal worth $7.9 million. This father-son duo is set to make history, fulfilling a long-held dream for LeBron and providing a new dynamic for the Lakers.
Despite these promising developments, James’s long-term future in the NBA remains uncertain. The Lakers are looking to bounce back from a disappointing first-round playoff exit last season, and James’s leadership will be crucial to their success. However, the potential end of his playing career looms, leaving fans and analysts alike to ponder what the future holds for the iconic player.
James’s legacy is already firmly established, with numerous records and accolades that will stand the test of time. Yet, as he approaches the end of his current contract, the possibility of retirement or transitioning into a different role within the sport becomes more tangible. Whether he chooses to extend his playing career beyond 2026 or steps away from the game, LeBron James’s impact on basketball will be felt for generations to come.
